Wissinoming

Wissinoming derives its name from a Lenni Lenape term meaning “where the grapes grow.” Wild grapes  once grew in densely wooded areas along the Wissinoming and Little Wissinoming creeks, which no longer exist.

Wissonoming is bordered by Tacony, Mayfair, Bridesburg, and the Delaware. Many factories that gave Philadelphia its moniker “Workshop of the World” were located in Wissinoming. The neighborhood had many laundries, bakeries, and other small businesses, in addition to housing for local workers. Today, many people in the neighborhood and greater Philadelphia are working to revitalize neighborhoods  like Wissonoming while supporting residents’ quality of life.
