As a statewide effort to build appreciation for forests, the people who care for them, and the importance of tending them, the Walk in Penn’s Woods is a day with organized woods walks in each Pennsylvania county. Anticipated to become an annual event on the first Sunday in October, this inaugural Walk in Penn’s Woods day happens October 1, 2017.
In our area, a walk is happening at Pennypack on the Delaware Park from 10am to 1pm. Join us for the day in the woods with representatives from The Philadelphia Insectarium and Butterfly Pavilion, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation and Friends of Pennypack Park, who will guide participants in a variety of activities including a nature hike through forest restoration and shoreline projects, trail maintenance, native insect identification and bird watching.
Our event is one of over 60 happening across the state.
Pennsylvania literally means Penn’s Woods. Penn’s Woods is one of the state’s prized Crown Jewels. Not only does it provide a spectacular and significant timber resource, but it provides incalculable value as a water resource, pollution filter, carbon store, wildlife habitat and biodiversity reserve, urban refuge, and a priceless source of recreational and aesthetic enjoyment. It is also a resource challenged by invasive plants and diseases, climate change, mismanagement, development pressure, and legacy issues. Learn from the professionals and those who care for and about the woods in Pennsylvania.
October 1, 2017 is a day to walk in the woods. We hope you’ll join us and celebrate Penn’s Woods.
